Causes Of Rosacea

Rosacea can cause a persons face to turn red and look as though they are sunburnt.

Rosacea is a skin disease that causes redness to form on a persons nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. You will find that many people will also be accompanied with pimples that will add to the redness of their face.  The redness will come and go and in many cases it will appear when a person is feeling an intense emotion such as happiness, sadness, embarrassment or even anger.  You will also find that in some cases it can appear to be acne.  Sometimes a adult will show signs of rosacea and many of them will confuse it with adult acne.  In some severe cases rosacea has been known to cause soreness and irritation to eyes and eyelids.  Rosacea can become a very embarrassing disease to many people. People suffering from rosacea will often be poked fun of for the redness that creeps across their face and neck and for some people it can be much more severe.  For people who suffer from rosacea and symptoms begin to spiral out of control they should consult a doctor for medication to help control rosacea. Many people do not understand the causes of rosacea and in this article I will go through all of the causes of rosacea, symptoms, treatments and even how to prevent rosacea from flaring up.

Symptoms Of Rosacea

You will find that people who suffer from rosacea may experience a multitude of symptoms. Typically the first sign of rosacea is a flushed face and pimple or bumps that seem to spread over the cheeks, nose, mouth and forehead. The timing of how long these symptoms will last depends on the person, sometimes it is minutes, hours or even days.  Some people experience symptoms such as tiny red veins that will appear over their face and nose that will look like spiderwebs.  Some people begin to experience a burning or stinging on their face.  Typically the stinging and burning will become worse when people try to apply lotions or medications to their faces. Some people have the opposite affect where they will experience a tight feeling on their face and it will become seriously dry, sensitive and appear to be sun burnt.  Others will also experience dry, red and irritated eyes.  Their eyelids may become inflamed and look red and extremely swollen. Some people will experience blurry vision and when this begins to happen a person needs to seek treatment. In some cases if a person does not seek treatment and the rosacea keeps getting out of hand it will cause a person to have serious eye problems.

Causes Of Rosacea

Rosacea causes an intense blush to form across a persons face that can last for minutes, hours if not days.

The causes of rosacea are unclear to doctors and the medical world in general.  What doctors have seemed to discover is that generally rosacea seems to affect people who have fair skin or those that tend to blush easily.  Rosacea has also been discovered to be genetic and for those of you with family members who suffer from rosacea you run a much higher risk of having rosacea or passing it along to your children.  There are common triggers that seem to cause rosacea to flare up and when this happens you will find that the blood vessels in a persons face will begin expanding and they will therefore cause the redness to occur on the face.  Common triggers that seem to happen to many people who suffer from rosacea are things such as the following:

  • Exercise
  • Sun
  • Wind Exposure
  • Hot Weather
  • Stress
  • Spicy Food
  • Alcohol
  • Hot Baths
  • Extreme Temperatures
  • Emotional Reactions

Treatment

Luckily for those of you who suffer from rosacea there are treatments out there for it.  These treatments will be prescribed by a doctor and will help to keep the rosacea under control. There is no cure for rosacea but luckily you will find that these treatments will allow you to help keep your rosacea under control and it will help to keep flare ups down.  You will find that these treatments are things such as antibiotic creams, pills and maybe even surgery.

Antibiotic creams and pills such as isotretinoin or Retin-A will help to treat the rosacea and reduce redness and the pimples. These antibiotics will help to treat and prevent eye problems as well.  You will find that these do take at least a month or two to kick in and begin to relieve signs and symptoms of rosacea.  Unfortunatley for those of you who are pregnant you will have to stop treatment while pregnant due to the fact that you do not want it to do anything harmful to the baby.  Some people decide to also go for surgery or other cosmetic treatments to help improve the look of their skin and face. You will find that popular surgeries for those who are battling with rosacea are things such as micro dermabrasion, cryosurgery or even laser surgery.

Prevention

As I said before the causes of rosacea are not totally clear but the triggers are and there are ways to help the symptoms and signs of rosacea from affecting you by figuring out your triggers and avoiding them.  One of the most important things for people to do is to figure out what triggers their rosacea and to avoid it as much as possible.  Many doctors and others who suffer from rosacea will tell others to keep a journal or diary of the things that they ate, drank and did that day, so that if their rosacea does flare up they will not what caused it and will try to avoid doing it again.

Using sunscreen everyday can also help to keep flare ups from affecting you and during the winter it is very important to make sure to keep your skin well moisturized to help alleviate any irritation from the cold and winds.  Another important thing to do to ensure that your rosacea will not flare up is to make sure to be careful about what products that you are using on your face.
